United States House of Representatives elections, 2022

2022 house elections

This year's election is also going to be different from 2020 in a very big way. Because of the pandemic, mail-in voting was used widely and that contributed heavily to increased turnout. In 2020, 66% of registered voters cast ballots, the highest since 1900. For lots of voters in the congressional district, the two nominees will be familiar names. For over a decade, Kennedy has represented Buffalo in the state Senate in a district that overlaps with the 26th Congressional District.

Where Senate Candidates Outperformed Biden and Trump

A seat created as a result of a state gaining a new congressional district due to apportionment is also considered open if no incumbent is running in it. If a tie happened, Trump would likely become president, because a tie would go to the House. Each House delegation would cast one collective vote for their states. The voting delegations would be those voted into the House after this year's congressional elections. It's also unclear how third-party candidates could affect the map. Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has been pulling double digits in polling, and it's not totally clear which side he pulls most from.

California primary: Where to vote in Southern California

The industrial Midwest has moved more toward Republicans because of the shift toward the GOP among white voters without college degrees. That's why states like Ohio and Iowa, which were competitive for decades until the Trump era, are no longer Democratic targets. That's only slightly behind what they're spending in Michigan. Biden is trying to make up ground there with younger voters and Black voters, groups he's lagging with. Trump and groups supporting him have spent only about $700,000 in Pennsylvania in that same time frame.

Incumbent Democrat Malia Cohen retired to run for state controller.[11] She was first elected in 2018 with 72.8% of the vote. Republican Jack Guerrero is seeking to unseat Democratic state Treasurer Fiona Ma in the November election. Competing for the California secretary of state election are Shirley Weber, 74, the Democratic incumbent, and Robert Bernosky, 59, a Republican businessman. Labor organizer Hugo Soto-Martinez is looking to unseat City Councilmember Mitch O’Farrell, who has spent nine years representing Hollywood and other areas. Newsom was first elected in 2018 with 61.9% of the vote. He faced a recall election in 2021 in which he prevailed. The California congressional race between David Valadao and Rudy Salas is key to the balance of Republican or Democratic power in Congress. These candidates are vying for four seats on the Los Angeles Community College District Board of Trustees. Meet the candidates and learn the positions of the candidates for two seats on L.A.

The upper chamber, the Senate, has 100 seats; two for each state, however populous. In every even-numbered year, roughly one-third of senators are elected for a six-year term. Senators have some additional responsibilities compared with their colleagues in the House; chiefly these have to do with confirming (or not) presidential appointments. Many seats in United States elections always go to the same party. So control of the Senate and House of Representatives depends on a relatively small number of competitive seats, or "battlegrounds". Election experts rank the competitive seats as more or less likely to return a Republican or Democrat.

Let us know how your in-person voting experience in California went and what issues you faced when you went to the polls. By contrast, Biden, who won 51% of the vote last time, knows that Trump’s core vote is solid. Rather than try to chip away at Trump’s total, his goal has to be to get past him. His campaign’s best bet is to sufficiently hold Biden’s vote down in the key swing states to allow 46% or 47% to prevail. That scenario requires third parties to win a significant vote. It’s impossible to know how many of Stein’s voters might have voted for Hillary Clinton, but the claim that she cost Clinton the election is at least plausible.

But the bulk of voters who are attracted to Kennedy aren’t activists. They skew young, but also tend to be less focused on politics and less likely to vote at all, polls show. A newly released study by the Pew Research Center finds that 91% of people who voted for Biden last time and 94% of those who voted for Trump plan to vote for the same person this year. Registered voters who did not cast a ballot in 2020 are almost evenly divided, Pew found.

Now, Biden appears to have regained some ground, especially among his fellow Democrats, and the race appears to be back to a dead heat, at least in national surveys. In most polls during the first half of last year, Biden led by a small margin. Trump took a small lead in surveys during the last few months of the year, which he held until early spring. Anita Chabria and David Lauter bring insights into legislation, politics and policy from California and beyond. The two well-deserved Trump impeachments are so different from Mayorkas’ and the Biden attempt they shouldn’t even be called tit for tat. Texas is a majority-minority state, but remains something of a white whale in Democratic politics.
